Doug Collins — DC Roof Consulting, LLC

Independent Roof Consulting You Can Trust

Doug Collins — DC Roof Consulting
60+ Years in Roofing

Doug Collins

Owner & Principal Consultant — DC Roof Consulting, LLC

Doug Collins started working on roofs in the early 1960s. What began as a trade became a career, and that career became Collins Roofing, Inc. — a commercial roofing company he founded in 1973 and built over the next 50 years into a multi-million dollar operation serving the Intermountain West.

When Doug sold Collins Roofing, Inc. in 2022, he had spent five decades on both sides of every roofing decision a property owner faces. He knew what good installation looked like, what it looked like when corners had been cut, and where building owners consistently got taken advantage of.

That knowledge was too useful to retire with. DC Roof Consulting, LLC exists to put it directly in the hands of the people who need it most — as a fully independent consultant with no roofing work to sell.

"DC Roof Consulting provides honest, third-party roof inspections and consulting. We do not sell roofing work — our recommendations are based entirely on what is best for the property owner, not on selling a repair or replacement."

— Doug Collins, Owner, DC Roof Consulting, LLC

Why independent consulting

When a roofing contractor inspects your roof, their business depends on finding work. That is not a character flaw — it is the nature of the contractor model. It simply means their recommendation carries an inherent conflict of interest.

DC Roof Consulting has no installation crew and no roofing materials to sell. Every inspection, every report, and every recommendation is fully independent. That is not just a selling point — it is the entire reason the business exists.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours is not here, call and ask — you will speak with Doug directly.

A roofing contractor who inspects your roof has a financial interest in finding work. That is not dishonest — it is just how their business works. An independent consultant like DC Roof Consulting has no installation crew and nothing to sell. The inspection report reflects what is actually happening on your roof, not what justifies a replacement quote.
This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that most roofs people are told need replacing actually need targeted repairs. The right answer depends on the age of the roof, the extent of the damage, and the condition of the system overall. That is exactly what an independent inspection tells you.
A full assessment of the roofing membrane or shingles, all flashings, penetrations, drainage, edge details, and any visible structural concerns. You receive a written report with photographs and prioritized recommendations — urgent, near-term, and monitor. No verbal summaries that are easy to forget or dispute later.
Our rates are competitive and among the best in the region. Every property is different — size, roof type, and location all affect the scope. Call for a custom estimate and we will give you a straight answer.
Yes — especially if it has a manufacturer warranty. Most commercial roofing warranties require a documented annual inspection to stay valid. Missing even one year can give the manufacturer grounds to deny a future claim. Newer roofs also benefit from early detection of installation deficiencies before they cause serious damage.
An experienced inspector can estimate remaining service life based on the roofing material, installation quality, weather exposure, and current condition. This is particularly useful for property owners planning capital budgets, real estate buyers doing due diligence, and lenders evaluating a property.
DC Roof Consulting is based in Bluffdale, Utah and serves the full Intermountain West — Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado. Have a project outside this area? Call and describe it — depending on scope we may be able to accommodate.
Most residential inspections take 45 minutes to 2 hours. Commercial properties vary by size and complexity. You will have the written report with photographs within a few business days of the visit.
Get the independent inspection first. A documented assessment of what the storm actually damaged — separated from pre-existing wear — gives you an accurate picture before you file. It also gives you something objective to reference if the insurance company's estimate and the actual damage do not match.
Doug founded Collins Roofing, Inc. in 1973 and ran it for 50 years before selling in 2022. He has installed, repaired, and inspected more roof systems than most inspectors will see in a lifetime. He is an NRCA associate member, licensed in Bluffdale, Utah. When he writes a report, it reflects 60 years of hands-on knowledge — not a checklist from a certification course.
